At Hermann’s with Cynthia Davis

The Doug Farr Quartet will be back at Hermann’s this Saturday, October 9th at 8pm. We’ll be featuring guest vocalist, Cynthia Davis. Let Cynthia dazzle you with tasty swing era hits and blues standards such as “Route 66″, “Bye Bye Blackbird”, and “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” Add a sprinkling of Latin Jazz and originals and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a night to remember. Doug Farr plays solo piano for Sooke Fine Arts Show

On Monday, July 26th, Doug will play solo piano at Seaparc Leisure Complex in Sooke as part of the Sooke Fine Arts show. He plays from 2pm-4pm. Sooke Fine Arts show showcases many local performers and has become a celebrated tradition.

The “smooth” and the “jagged” at Logan’s Pub

Logan’s pub had something for everyone last night. The smooth swing of The Doug Farr Quartet was, er, an unusual style of music to hear at Victoria’s live rock music hub. It was two totally different kinds of cool as Doug Farr Quartet opened with classic jazz and blues, followed by the Wiley Fawks Band with their intense rock mixed with country and R&B. Two bands playing on the same stage couldn’t BE more different than these two bands, but when Wiley Fawks invited Doug to play harmonica on a few tunes, it was clear that all the musicians are driven by the same passion. The crowd loved both the ‘smooth’ and the ‘jagged’ as Shaun put it, and both bands were in top form.

A night at Hermann’s

The Doug Farr Quartet played to a happy crowd at Hermann’s last Friday. The music was ‘sweet’ and ‘hot’ with smooth ballads like “And I Love Her” and riff-out blues like “Duke’s Place.” Crowd went wild on “It don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing” especially with all the surprises near the end! Other favourites were “Moanin’” and “Miss Celie’s Blues.” There was a bet going for how many instruments Doug would play, and the grand total was….5: piano, harmonica, bongos, ‘mouth bongos’ and voice. Kathy and Doug trading fours was fantastic – more please! Kathy’s sizzling vocals were only slightly hotter than her bright red dress. This singer puts her whole self into the song, and is obviously having fun doing it. Daniel’s guitar solos were out of this world; the audience couldn’t take their eyes off him. David had the crowd eating out of his hand with his ultimately cool solos and smooth intros. Doug, both as pianist and leader, brings fresh tasteful ideas to every song. The audience loved his humour and his musicianship that comes through no matter what instrument he is holding.
